If you’ve been feeling down or depressed, coaching can help.

Here’s how:

Setting and sticking to your goals

When you’re feeling depressed, it can be hard to see the bigger picture. You might not feel like you have specific goals you’re working toward. A lot of people have a hard time feeling motivated when depressed and can even feel hopeless.

Your coach can help you get clear on your values and goals and then take small, actionable steps that’ll help you get there. With a dedicated coach checking in, you’ll have someone to be accountable to. You’ll also have a teammate to keep you motivated when the depressed voice in your head tells you “why bother?” And if you hit a roadblock, instead of giving up, your coach can help you troubleshoot.

It’s basically like having someone on your road trip helping you navigate, feeding you snacks, and reminding you why the destination is worth it.

Creating healthy routines

Depression does not like healthy routines. Have you ever noticed that when you’re feeling down, all you want to do is stay in bed with a bag of chips, ignoring your friends’ texts and zoning out on your phone? We’ve all been there — those things can feel easier and more comforting in the moment. But over time they can keep you feeling stuck in that depressed place.

Your coach will help find ways to open the windows, tidy your space, and start your days off in a healthier way. Creating (and maintaining) a healthy routine is a proven way to manage depression.

Challenging negative thoughts

You might be having a lot of negative self-talk or grim thoughts about the future. Think of them like your “depression brain.” Your depression brain will tell you all sorts of things: “Your friends are tired of supporting you. You’re going to get fired from work. It’s not worth it to try something new.”

Your coach is here to introduce another voice. They can help you challenge these negative thoughts so your self-talk is kinder, your future feels brighter, and that “depression voice” in your head quiets down.

Finding new ways to cope

The more you know about your triggers, the better you can respond to them. Everyone’s different, so it’s really useful to have a coach by your side to help you figure out exactly how depression works for you. Then, you’ll work together to figure out ways to cope that really work for you. It’ll take some experimentation and your coach is your lab partner.

Feeling truly supported

Depression can feel isolating — but with your coach, you’re not alone. Your coach is someone who cares about how you’re feeling and genuinely wants to help. Having that support can make a huge difference in how you feel day-to-day.
