Is mental health coaching right for you?
Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the balls that you are juggling and not sure what to do next? Are you feeling stuck in figuring out how to make a dream a reality? Are you feeling like you don’t totally know what you are feeling and that it’s impacting your relationship with others? Are you not sure what type of help would be best for you and how to find it?
Mental health coaching may be for you. Not familiar with that term? Mental health coaching is a collaborative and personalized partnership between the coach and the client, aimed at achieving meaningful changes in the client’s life. This process involves understanding each client's unique situation, goals, and aspirations. As a coach, my role is to support and guide clients through their journey, not by dictating their path, but by working alongside them as they navigate towards their desired future.
If we have piqued your interest, and you still aren’t sure if its for you, here are some answers to other common questions:
Do mental health coaches tell people what to do?
No. Coaches work with clients to help them discover and define what they want to do for themselves. Coaches use their training and knowledge of motivation, behavior change, health and wellbeing topics and goal setting to facilitate the process as is needed based on the client’s needs.
Do mental health coaches give plans and instructions about how to change?
No. Coaches work with clients to help with co-creating strategies and plans that meet them where they are at and helps them to move in the direction they want to go. Coaches are mindful of not accelerating too quickly, and want to help the client engage in learning about themselves and the change they want to make so they are pursuing change sustainably
Do mental health coaches teach people how to do new things?
Yes, sometimes. Coaches hold a wealth of knowledge about different topics, approaches and skills and can share that information with the client only when it supports the client in their process. Coaches do this because they know that there is a big difference between knowing something and doing something, and they want to make sure the work with the client is setting them up for success.
Do mental health coaches help people build new skills?
Yes. Coaches can help clients to learn and build new skills based on how they are connected to the clients goals. When there is a current challenge that is present in the day to day and making it hard to live the life one wants, coaches will work with clients to address the challenge(s) so that they can get to where they want to be.
Do mental health coaches help me understand what I want?
Yes. Coaches work with clients to better understand what they want and can do that regardless of how much is initially understood. Whether this is something you have been working for a long time, or something that you haven’t yet begun to think about, a coach can help you explore your values, your dreams and co create a strategy for how to move in that direction.
